Letters Concerning the Voynich Manuscript

Letter Concerning Voynich Manuscript

Letter Concerning Voynich Manuscript

I find myself fascinated with the Voynich Manuscript of my last post. The Yale library rare books website thingy provides a link to a related document that contains two letters concerning the acquisition of the Manuscript. First we have a hand-written letter from one Ethel Lillian Voynich, executor of Wilfred Michael Voynich’s will. The second letter is type-written in Italian from a Marc[o] Tornetta. I typed out the italian letter so that I might translate it. Here are the (sketchy, mediocre) results.

Original Italian text:

Stimatissimo Signore,

Esteemed Sir,
I’m sorry that she could not stay longer with us. I am heartened, however, the promise of a visit in September and I hope it will stop some day.
Immediately I wanted to write to thank her but thought better to wait until later because I had to ask you a favor.
A jew of Padua strongly urges to buy some books from our library and are precisely those of which I send you the list.
It would be our intention to cede a part and perhaps most or all but ignoring the price that you can rightly ask indicarcelo dare to ask you to favor us and also some practical advice, the thing which we will riconoscentissimi.
And if she herself wanted to pick up some of those very books of oxen can we give preference to the one that you offer the same shall judge convenient.
The join in the photograph of the canvas that we want to sell … was estimated several thousand francs and the work of the Piazzetta, although this is not quite certain.
